Start a Draft League With Four Friends

Four people who will turn up and keep playing are enough to start a draft fantasy league. You do not need to keep postponing draft night while the group chat searches for another four names. In Top Four Fantasy, you can play with four managers or choose a larger league and fill the remaining seats with bots.

Here, four means four managers altogether: you and three friends. For a group that wants an ongoing rivalry, our recommendation is a four-manager Full Season league with Balanced scoring and Super Sub. Use the standard 16-player squads, agree a draft time and build from the group you already have.

Four managers still create a proper rivalry

Exclusive ownership gives even a small league something to argue about. Once your friend drafts a player, that footballer belongs to their squad. You have to find another option or, once your Full Season league is active, make a trade offer. The draft gives everyone a different team to follow, while head-to-head Gameweeks turn familiar friends into regular opponents. A small group also makes it easier to agree a time and know who needs a reminder.

The competition structure is simpler at this size. Four-team Full Season leagues have no Cup or Top Four playoffs; the regular-season table decides the champion. Choose that because your group enjoys a league campaign, rather than expecting a knockout finish. Cup and playoff options become available in Full Season leagues of six or more teams. The How TFF works guide explains the wider format.

A smaller league changes the decisions

With the standard 16-player squads, a four-manager draft selects 64 players. Six managers select 96; eight select 128. With fewer players owned, the remaining pool will usually offer more credible replacements. That gives a new group room to recover from a poor pick or an injury. It also changes the standard for your squad: a dependable starter may be essential in a crowded league but replaceable when several stronger options are still available.

Strong squads do not remove the challenge. They shift it towards choosing between good options, spotting changes in role and deciding when to move on. A famous name is less persuasive if another player can improve your XI immediately. Trades need a clear purpose too. If your friend can find a similar player in the pool, they have little reason to give up somebody valuable for yours. Check their needs and the available alternatives before sending an offer.

Pick the amount of competition you want

Four human managers give you the most direct social setup: every opponent is someone you know. Adding bots lets the same group play in a larger league, with more squads competing for players. The right choice depends on whether your group wants a generous player pool or more difficult replacement decisions.

Setup Players drafted with 16 per squad Best reason to choose it
4 friends 64 Everyone knows every opponent; more replacement options
4 friends + 2 bots 96 A smaller step towards a deeper league; Cup and playoffs available
4 friends + 4 bots 128 More competition for players without recruiting eight people

Bots fill seats, but the social side still comes from your four friends. You cannot offer a bot a trade, so adding bots does not create more human negotiating partners. TFF also supports handing a bot seat to a friend later. Think of that as taking over an existing seat, rather than assuming you can expand a completed four-team draft into a bigger competition. If friends are likely to join later, consider the bot-seat option when choosing the initial league size.

Use settings your group will enjoy

For four friends who want to make weekly decisions, Balanced and Super Sub are a useful starting point. Balanced rewards attacking and defensive contributions as well as goals and assists. Super Sub keeps responsibility for the XI and bench priority with the manager, while allowing eligible replacements for zero-minute starters when the Gameweek becomes Final. That is our recommendation for this group, not the platform's default lineup mode, which is Manager.

If the group prefers familiar fantasy scoring, choose Classic. If weekly lineup selection is the main obstacle to participation, consider Best XI, which selects the highest-scoring valid XI from the active roster at Final. You still have a squad to manage. Agree the choice before drafting because it affects which players and bench options you value. The league-settings guide compares the alternatives in more detail.

Make draft night easy to organise

Choose one organiser and settle the decisions that everyone needs to understand: the football competition, Full Season format, league size, scoring and lineup mode. Then put a specific draft time in the group chat. “Thursday at 8pm” gives people something to accept; “we should draft soon” gives them another conversation to ignore. For a first attempt, allowing time for questions before the opening pick is more useful than expecting everyone to learn while their turn is running.

Each manager should arrive with alternatives at every position. A four-person draft still rewards preparation, especially when someone takes your preferred player immediately before your turn. Learn how the snake order reverses between rounds and plan a balanced 16-player squad. The draft preparation guide covers the research and practical checks. Keep the evening focused on getting everyone comfortable enough to make their own choices.

Give the league a weekly rhythm

Once the draft is over, a small league benefits from a light routine: check availability, review possible squad improvements and pay attention to the next matchup. In Manager or Super Sub, make time to set the XI and bench. In Best XI, focus that attention on the active squad. Use your existing group chat for the reactions and rivalry. Sharing a close result or a regretted bench decision gives friends a reason to come back without turning the organiser into a full-time reminder service.

Start with the people who are ready to play. Choose four human teams if you want a straightforward contest between friends, or add bot seats if your group wants more competition for players and room for future takeovers. Either way, the useful next step is to agree the setup and get a date in the diary.
